Hi everyone. I'm Mary Qiu, MD, and I’m the glaucoma fellowship director at Cole Eye Institute at Cleveland Clinic. I just comoderated a session here at Glaucoma Subspecialty Day at the American Academy of Ophthalmology 2026 meeting, where we invited a series of program directors to share their best surgical pearls. Here I have Craig J. Chaya, MD, the glaucoma fellowship director at Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah. Craig, can you tell us about some of the pearls that you shared with the audience this morning?
Craig J. Chaya, MD: One of the pearls that I shared was it’s important for us as glaucoma surgeons to really pay attention to details, because it’s the culmination of paying attention to those details that leads to surgical success when we put all those small details together. So the one that I focused on was about applying mitomycin, in terms of the exposure of how we apply mitomycin, to be very meticulous with how we handle mitomycin—particularly not to put it directly under the conjunctiva, but to get it under the subtenon’s pocket as diffusely as possible.
Dr. Qiu: Those are some great tips and pearls. Hopefully everyone out there will learn a lot from all of these presentations today from Dr. Chaya and the rest of our panel. If you didn't have a chance to tune in live, you can watch the webcast online. And if there are any residents out there considering glaucoma, apply to our fellowships! GP
