Researchers from India set out to determine if 30 patients with medically uncontrolled primary open-angle glaucoma and scheduled for trabeculectomy could benefit from 45 minutes of daily mindfulness meditation over a 3-week period. At 3 weeks, a significant decrease in IOP was seen in the meditation group as compared to a control group. Gene expression analysis revealed significant upregulation of nitric oxide synthetase and neuroprotective genes with downregulation of proinflammatory genes in the meditation group. mindfulness meditation was associated with significant decrease in IOP and changes in trabecular meshwork gene expression, indicating its direct impact on ocular tissues. Findings were reported in the American Journal of Ophthalmology.
