Three investigator-led, retrospective case series evaluating the long-term effectiveness of canaloplasty using the Itrack device (Nova Eye Medical) in patients with open-angle glaucoma have been published, the company announced. A 36-month case series in Ophthalmology Glaucoma and a 48-month case series in Klinische Monatsblätter für Augenheilkunde both demonstrated a significant reduction in mean IOP as compared to baseline, along with a significant decrease in the mean number of glaucoma medications, following Itrack canaloplasty.1,2
A total of 44 eyes of 44 patients were included in the first study; 23 eyes underwent Itrack as a standalone procedure and 21 eyes had Itrack in combination with cataract surgery. A statistically significant reduction in IOP and number of medications between baseline and all postoperative visits (P<.0001) either when canaloplasty was performed as a standalone procedure or in combination with cataract surgery was found. The second study confirmed the first, with the comparable reduction in IOP and medications sustained at 48 months postoperatively.
A third case series report, published in Cornea, found that canaloplasty was effective and safe in 17 eyes after corneal transplant.3 The authors found that canaloplasty effectively reduced IOP and maintained graft survivability in postkeratoplasty eyes for at least 12 months. Nova Eye Medical reported in a news release that the frequency of surgical and postsurgical complications reported was low in all 3 studies, with no serious adverse events recorded.
