Both standalone and combined use of trabecular microbypass (iStent; Glaukos) resulted in significant IOP and medication reductions as well as the avoidance of filtration surgery at 7-year follow-up, according to a poster presented at the 2023 annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
The study was a prospective consecutive 7-year case series of trabecular microbypass with or without phacoemulsification in 125 eyes with mild to advanced open-angle glaucoma. Mean IOP was reduced by 40% (P<.001) in all 125 eyes, 38% (P<.001) in the 81 combined eyes, and 43% (P<.001) in the 44 eyes receiving standalone therapy, reported lead author Fritz H. Hengerer, MD. The mean number of medications was reduced by 59% (P<.001) in all eyes, 58% (P<.001) in combined eyes, and 62% (P<.001) in standalone eyes. No filtration surgeries occurred in either group through 7 years.
